Korea Blends KBO Core with MLB Experience for 2026 World Baseball Classic (30-man roster)

Korea has unveiled its 30-man roster for the 2026 World Baseball Classic, a group built on balance and practicality rather than flash. The final selection features 23 players from the KBO League and seven from MLB organizations, reflecting a roster philosophy centered on depth, adaptability, and short-tournament execution.

A KBO-Driven Foundation (23 Players)

The backbone of the roster comes from the KBO League, where most of the team’s pitchers and everyday position players have been tested over full seasons. Veteran left-hander Ryu Hyun-jin anchors a pitching staff that blends experience with younger power arms, while proven domestic starters and relievers give Korea multiple pathways to manage high-leverage innings in a condensed schedule.

Offensively, the KBO contingent provides stability across the diamond. Catchers with game-calling experience, infielders capable of both contact and power, and outfielders known for defense and baserunning form a group designed to minimize mistakes — a critical factor in WBC play, where margins are slim and games often swing on situational execution.

Seven MLB Organization Players Add Range and Flexibility

Complementing the domestic core are seven players currently with MLB organizations. Three pitchers bring exposure to higher-velocity environments and advanced bullpen usage, offering Korea matchup options against elite international lineups.

The position-player group includes versatile infield and outfield options, highlighted by Lee Jung-hoo, whose transition to the Major League Baseball has added another layer of global experience to the roster. Along with other MLB-affiliated hitters, this group expands Korea’s tactical flexibility, particularly in late-game scenarios and platoon situations.

By the Numbers

  • Total players: 30
  • KBO League: 23
  • MLB organizations: 7
  • Pitchers: 15
  • Position players: 15

Built for the Tournament, Not the Headlines

Rather than leaning heavily on star power, Korea’s roster construction reflects the realities of the World Baseball Classic: short rest, frequent high-pressure moments, and rapid adjustments. The emphasis on KBO continuity ensures chemistry and role clarity, while the MLB presence adds ceiling and adaptability.

As Korea prepares for the 2026 WBC, this 23-and-7 blend signals a measured approach — one that prioritizes balance, depth, and readiness for the unique demands of international competition.

The KBO Technical Committee has confirmed two roster changes for the upcoming World Baseball Classic (WBC) due to injuries.

Right-handed pitcher Riley O’Brien of the St. Louis Cardinals will be replaced by Kim Taek-yeon of the Doosan Bears. In addition, Won Tae-in of the Samsung Lions has been ruled out and will be replaced by Yoo Young-chan of the LG Twins.

The KBO has officially submitted a request to the WBC Organizing Committee for approval of both player replacements.
